Unexplained wealth
linked to criminal activity.
Sometimes a person’s lifestyle, assets or spending habits do not seem to match how they earn their money.
In partnership with Victoria Police, we are asking Victorians to report information about wealth, assets or lifestyles that appear inconsistent with a person’s known income.

Victoria strengthened its unexplained wealth laws in 2024, introducing new powers to investigate wealth that appears inconsistent with a person’s lawful income. Authorities can seek an unexplained wealth order where there are reasonable grounds to suspect a person’s wealth exceeds their lawfully acquired wealth by at least $200,000.
If a court is satisfied that wealth cannot be explained through legitimate means, assets can be restrained and the value of that wealth may be recovered by the State. Even if the money has already been spent, courts can still order the value of unexplained wealth to be repaid.
UNEXPLAINED WEALTH
The Law...
Authorities can go to court if they reasonably
suspect someone has at least $200,000 in wealth
that cannot be explained by their known income.
Courts can restrain and control property,
including freezing assets or preventing them
from being sold or transferred while proceedings
are underway.
A person may be required to explain how they
acquired their wealth and demonstrate that it was
obtained lawfully.
Action can be taken based on unexplained wealth
itself, without needing to prove a specific criminal
offence.
Even if the money has already been spent, courts
can still order it to be paid back to the State.
Funds recovered may also be used to compensate
victims and support restitution.
